The best barbershop software in 2026 runs online booking with deposits, payments and tips at the chair, client history, team schedules and marketing from one place. No tool wins for every shop, so the honest rule is to match it to yours: a solo barber, a busy multi-chair shop or a small chain.

Key takeaways

  • Squire is built only for barbershops at a flat price per shop; Booksy, Fresha and theCut add a marketplace that can send new clients.
  • Square Appointments has a free plan and its own hardware; Vagaro packs a long feature list into its base plan.
  • Compare pricing models, not headline prices: per barber, per location or per shop, plus fees on new marketplace clients.
  • Fluent keeps deposits, payments and tips, client history, shifts and an AI assistant you approve in one system, without a marketplace.

What should barbershop software do in 2026?

It should run the whole appointment, from booking to the next visit, so you spend the day cutting instead of chasing. Five jobs decide a barber's day:

  • Booking that protects the chair: online booking plus a deposit, prepayment or card on file, so a no-show costs the client, not you. See our guide to a barber booking system with deposits.
  • Payments and tips at the chair: a reader or phone at the station, tips tracked per barber, walk-ins in the same register.
  • Client history: past visits, guard numbers and notes, visible to whoever is on the chair.
  • Team tools: each barber's schedule, plus commission or booth rent if that's how your shop pays.
  • Bringing regulars back: reminders, rebooking messages, loyalty and gift cards.

How did we compare the options?

We compared six tools US barbers often weigh against each other, plus our own, on the five jobs above, marketplace fees and the pricing model. Every claim about another company comes from its own pricing, feature and help pages, checked on October 11, 2026, not from review sites.

What to compare in barbershop software: nine criteria, from online booking and no-show protection to pricing model

Prices are as listed on each vendor's site in October 2026, in US dollars, before tax. Check their pricing page for current rates: plans, promotions and card fees change. Where a vendor's pages disagreed, we used the pricing page and say so.

Fluent is our product, so it gets the same four headings as every other tool in this barber shop software comparison, including what it doesn't do.

What are the best barbershop software options in 2026?

They're in no ranking order, with Fluent last because it's ours.

Squire

  • Best for: owners, solo to multi-location, who want software built only for barbershops at one price per shop.
  • Strengths: No-show protection stores a card at booking and charges your fee on a no-show; Book & Pay takes payment upfront. The register and reader share the calendar's system, tips go to the barber who earned them, and Auto Payout splits each sale at your commission rates. Client records hold visit history, preferred barber and notes. Squire's AI covers rebooking campaigns and a reporting assistant you can ask for revenue by barber.
  • Trade-offs: Features step up by tier. Multi-location support, unlimited email and SMS marketing, and commission and rent collection start at Executive; inventory, gift cards and loyalty sit on Titan.
  • Pricing model: a flat monthly fee per shop with no per-barber charge: Independent $30, Pro $50, Executive $150 and Titan $250 a month, per Squire's pricing page (opens in a new tab). Card payments cost 2.5% + 20¢ in person and 2.9% + 30¢ online.

Booksy

  • Best for: barbers who want new clients from a consumer marketplace alongside their regulars.
  • Strengths: Clients book you through the Booksy app and website, Reserve with Google, Instagram and Facebook. Deposits come off the final bill, and cancellation fees can be charged to the card on file. Commissions and tips are calculated at every checkout, stock counts update with low-stock alerts, and client cards hold notes and photos. Marketing covers rebooking reminders, email and text campaigns and digital loyalty cards. Booksy also offers an AI voice assistant for incoming calls and bookings from Google's AI Mode.
  • Trade-offs: The price rises with each team member. Boost, Booksy's paid promotion, charges a one-time fee on each new client it brings; clients from your own marketing, or with Boost off, carry no commission.
  • Pricing model: $29.99 a month plus $20 for each additional team member, all features included and no commitment, per Booksy's pricing page (opens in a new tab). Boost costs 30% of a new client's first visit, up to $100. The card reader costs 2.49% + 10¢; deposits and card-on-file charges cost 2.69% + 30¢.

Vagaro

  • Best for: shops that want many features in the base plan and don't mind paid extras.
  • Strengths: The base plan lists payments, a waitlist, memberships, 1,000 free emails a month, reporting, loyalty, inventory, invoices, unlimited reminders and a free Marketplace listing. Shops can collect deposits upfront and charge no-show fees. PayPro card readers take payments, card tips can flow into payroll, and commissions can be tiered. Vera, Vagaro's AI assistant, drafts email copy and service descriptions and promotes open slots on the Marketplace.
  • Trade-offs: Vagaro also serves salons, spas and fitness, so its menu is broad, not barber-only. Some tools are paid add-ons, such as forms at $10 a month and text-message credits from $20 a month.
  • Pricing model: $23.99 a month with one calendar, which Vagaro labels a limited-time rate, plus $10 for each additional calendar up to seven, per Vagaro's pricing page (opens in a new tab). In-person card rates depend on monthly card volume; smaller merchants pay 2.6% + 10¢.

Square Appointments

  • Best for: solo barbers who want a free plan to start, and shops already using Square for payments.
  • Strengths: The Free plan costs nothing a month, and automated text and email reminders come with every plan. Square's own hardware, from Terminal to Register, covers chair and counter. Staff earn flat or tiered commissions, card tips can be split across staff on shift, and inventory has low-stock alerts. Client profiles keep notes, cards on file and visit history together. Clients can find you on Square Go, Square's free marketplace for beauty businesses, and confirm, cancel or reschedule by text through Square Assistant.
  • Trade-offs: Cancellation policies and no-show protection need Plus or Premium. Paid plans are priced per location, which adds up for a chain.
  • Pricing model: Free $0, Plus $49 and Premium $149 per location a month, per Square's Appointments pricing page (opens in a new tab). In-person card rates fall from 2.6% + 15¢ on Free to 2.4% + 15¢ on Premium.

Fresha

  • Best for: solo barbers and small teams wanting a low entry price and marketplace exposure.
  • Strengths: Deposits, cards on file, and cancellation and no-show fees can be set per service, per client group or above an appointment value. Fresha card terminals or Tap to Pay on a phone take payments, tips can feed into commission, and stock tracking includes alerts. The marketplace can send new clients; returning clients never carry its fee. AI Concierge, a paid add-on, handles calls and messages, books and moves appointments, and drafts review replies.
  • Trade-offs: You pay per bookable team member, and each new client who finds you on the marketplace carries a one-time fee.
  • Pricing model: Independent is $19.95 a month for one bookable team member; Team is $14.95 a month per bookable team member, per Fresha's pricing page (opens in a new tab). New marketplace clients carry a one-time 20% fee, minimum $6. Card payments cost 2.29% + 20¢ in person and 2.79% + 20¢ online.

theCut

  • Best for: independent and booth-renting barbers who run their book from their phone.
  • Strengths: It's made for barbers. Clients search by location, price and availability and book in the app. With Mobile Pay, the client's card is preauthorized, and you decide whether to charge a cancellation or no-show fee under your policy. Tap to Pay turns your iPhone into a card reader for booked clients and walk-ins, and clients add the tip on the device. Client notes track preferences, and shop owners get team management and booth rent tracking.
  • Trade-offs: Only PRO barbers appear in search. Card payments carry a 2.75% fee for the barber and a $0.95 fee per transaction for the client.
  • Pricing model: Free at $0, PRO at $25 a month and a Shop profile at $0, per theCut's pricing page (opens in a new tab). theCut's FAQ lists PRO at $20 a month, so confirm the price in the app.

Fluent

  • Best for: independent shops and small chains that want barbershop software covering booking, payments, team and stock in one system, with an AI assistant.
  • Strengths: With Fluent Booking, clients request a time on your booking page and pick from the barbers who are free; you accept, decline or propose another time. You can take a deposit or the full price when the client books. Payments, the POS, inventory, invoices and an online store run in the same system, and tips are recorded per barber. Client history and notes sit with the appointment, and Shifts syncs schedules to Google Calendar. Fluent AI prepares replies to booking requests, drafts invoices, flags low stock and finds lapsed regulars; nothing goes out until you approve. It's a web app that runs on a tablet, computer or phone.
  • Trade-offs: There's no marketplace, so new clients come from your own website, social profiles and word of mouth. Automatic appointment reminders are coming soon; today an email goes out on every booking change. It needs an internet connection.
  • Pricing model: listed on our pricing page, shown in your currency. Card payments run through payment partners such as Stripe and SumUp, depending on your country and setup.

Which barbershop software fits your shop?

Start from your shop's shape, then check the features you'd miss most.

Solo barber

Keep fixed costs low and make no-shows expensive. Square Appointments Free and theCut's free plan cost nothing a month; Fresha Independent, theCut PRO, Booksy and Squire Independent cost $19.95 to $30. Need new clients? A barber booking app with a marketplace can send them, at the fees above. Book already full? Put your money into deposits and client history.

Busy multi-chair shop

Per-member pricing (Booksy, Fresha) grows with your team, as does Vagaro's calendar fee up to seven calendars; Squire charges one flat fee per shop. Check tips and commission per barber, schedules, and one client record every barber can see. That's where an all-in-one system earns its keep: deposit, cut, tip and next visit stay tied to one client.

Small chain

With two or more shops, look for one client list, stock by location and comparable reports. Squire's Executive and Titan tiers add multi-location support, Square manages stock per location, theCut runs multiple shops from one account, and Fluent AI shows revenue by location.

Where does Fluent fit?

Fluent fits shops that would rather run the day from one system than juggle a booking app, a card reader app and a group chat for shifts. Fluent AI works across it: ask which booking requests are waiting, which regulars haven't been in for six weeks, or what each barber took in sales and tips this week. It shows the evidence behind each answer, and nothing is sent or changed until you approve.

Where it's weaker: no marketplace sends you new clients, automatic reminders are coming soon, and it needs an internet connection.

Frequently asked questions

Is there free barbershop software?

Yes, with limits. Square Appointments has a Free plan at $0 a month per location, and theCut has a free plan. You still pay card processing, and Square's cancellation policies and no-show fees need Plus or Premium. Free suits a solo barber starting out; a busy shop usually outgrows it.

Do marketplace apps take a cut of new clients?

Some do, on the first visit only. Booksy's Boost charges 30% of a new client's first visit, up to $100, when Boost brought them in. Fresha charges a one-time 20% fee, minimum $6, on new marketplace clients. Neither charges for returning clients. Vagaro's US pricing page lists a free Marketplace listing.

Do you need a separate barbershop POS?

Usually not. Every tool here takes card payments in the same system as the book, through its own reader, a terminal or Tap to Pay on a phone. What differs is the processing rate, whether tips are tracked per barber, and whether walk-ins and retail land in the same reports.

How do you switch barbershop booking software without losing clients?

Switch in a quiet week. Ask your current provider to export your client list and future appointments, set up your service menu, and put the new booking link everywhere clients find you. Run both until the old book is empty. In each demo, ask what the vendor imports for you.
